Free VST - TAL-NoiseMaker

TAL-NoiseMaker is an improved version of TAL-Elek7ro and has a completely new synth engine and a lot of improvements in sound and usability. The synth also includes a small effect section with a reverb, chorus and a simple bit crusher effect.

A display shows the knob and slider values. This allows more control over the synth. A ringmodulator and a syncable triangle are also part of this synth. TAL-NoiseMaker includes new filter types as the self resonating 6dB low pass and a notch filter. Its improved amplitude ADSR is very suitable for slow pads as for really fast envelopes. 128 factory presets included, 80 made by Frank "Xenox" Neumann / Particular - Sound.

Free Beat maker VST Software - HighLife Sampler

The HighLife sampler from discoDSP is one of the best free samplers you can get your hands on. It does just about everything you would expect from a software sampler.

HighLife VST features some impressive features like a built in WAV editor, auto mapping and some unique effects processing.

Input formats include WAV and MP3 and it can export into various formats including SFZ.

Probably the most impressive feature is the one that lets you load another VST inside of HighLife and sample it! Say you own a copy of Reaktor Synth and you make a really cool patch. You might want to collab with someone that doesn't own Reaktor. HighLife can load Reaktor and load your patch and make a preset out of it. Now your collaborator only needs to download the patch and HighLife and he can use the same patch as you!

Got the discoDSP page for more information and the download link for HighLife.

Free VST - AutoTalent (Auto tune like plugin)

You all know Autotune. The plug-in that T-Pain made famous in recent years by over using it? Yes some people like Cher used autotune many years before but it was T-Pain that brought it into the forefront of pop music for a while.

There are some freeware autotune like programs already out there like G-Snap, but a new contender has entered the market.

Called Autotalent, this is a VST port of Tom Baran's open source pitch correction LADSPA plug-in. All credit goes to Tom for the algorithm. At the moment it is designed to be used on a mono track, if used on a stereo track, the left channel will be copied to the right.

So there you go. Give a try and get your T-Pain chops up.

Free VST - 3 Reverbs To Check Out

Reverbs are a must for just about any songwriter, beat maker, music maker. It's true they can be over used at times, but they are such a common tool that I wanted to take a moment to talk about three very good and free reverb VST effects.

Reverb is short for "Reverberation" which basically means the effect of sound bouncing off of surfaces and reflecting back into the listener's ear. It can be used to make dramatic effects like spooky ghost talking or subtler effects like making a performance sound like it's in a small room.

Most of us have heard reverb if we ever sign or make a loud sound in the bathroom. Since bathrooms tend to have a lot of hard surfaces like tile, the sound in this room really bounces around.

First up we have a freeware reverb called SIR1. SIR1 is a reverb device that works with "impulse-responses" (IR). These are data files that contain information about real world environments. For example, you could download an IR recording made at the Hollywood Bowl and use it in SIR1 to get an accurate reverb as if you were playing at the Hollywood Bowl!

Generally, this type of reverb may introduce a delay into your mix, so you will need a host that can compensate for it. This is by far the best sounding type of reverb that exists today. There is a commercial SIR2 that offers zero-latency and more features.

Second on the list is an oldie but a goodie. Often thought to be one of the best all-time free reverbs on the market, we have Ambience. Technically this would be called donation ware since you are free to pay what you think it's worth, whenever you want. If has a nag screen, but otherwise functions perfectly even if you choose not to donate.

Finally, we get to RoomMachine 844. It's a room simulator. This is a very useful reverb for things like drums and vocals where you don't want a long reverb tail, but do want to give the sounds that little extra "oomph" to make it stand out. The room simul;ations sounds very natural. Many people I know use this exclusively for vocals because it does such a great job.

There you go... Three different, useful and free reverbs for you to add to your collection. Have fun!

Beat Maker Tip - Make Beats on a Budget #1

One of the hardest things beat makers have to overcome is buying quality gear. Yes, making beats can be an expensive hobby or profession.

Luckily I have a tip that very little people know about that can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars on gear. Things like Audio interfaces, MIDI controllers, DAW software and more can be purchased LEGALLY at huge discounts using this method.

Once I let this information out, every beat maker looking to save some dough will be able to benefit. :)

The method is to use something called academic discounts also known as student discounts. There is a little known sector of the software and hardware industry that sell products at discounts for students and teachers.

Most of you out there probably are students or know people who are students. If you do, you can qualify for these discounts.

So what kind of discounts are we talking about? Lets take some real life examples:

Those are some pretty decent savings!

When you decide to buy from an academic pricing site, be prepared to send them a scan of your student or faculty ID. Also be sure to check which items are available to students only versus teacher only.

Now not every software or hardware will be available at a great savings, but if you're a smart beat maker in search of gear, you will take the time to research other sites before you buy.

Audio Production Tips - Fixing Samples

Those of you using programs that can play back WAV samples like FL Studio may have run into the problem where som WAV files play back in loop mode or pitched to a certain key when used in the pattern but sound perfect when previewed.

This is caused by cue points, tempo and root note information being stored in the sample. It is ignored by the previewer but used in the sample player.

There are a few ways of correcting the problem. First you can disable the various settings in the FL channel properties that use these cue points, tempo and root note data.

Here is a video from Warbeats that shows how it's done:

the second way is to run a program to remove the points and resave the sample without them. This would be very useful if you find that a drum kit you are using has a lot of these embedded points.

Enter the freeware Wave File Stripper. A free program from Optostudio to remove these unwanted cue points and markers. Simply drag audio files onto the GUI for processing and continue working.

To make a great program even better, you can donate to the developer and he'll send a proceed of that money to the relief effort in Haiti. How great is that!
